    Bangladesh floods kill 51 and affect one million people

    DHAKA, BANGLADESH / RankWire.AI / – Floods, heavy rain and landslides have killed 51 people across Bangladesh, according to the latest government assessment. The disaster has affected 1,022,963 people in seven southeastern and northeastern districts. Floodwater has marooned 267,918 families across 58 upazilas, 386 unions and 11 municipalities. The affected districts are Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachhari, Moulvibazar and Habiganj.

    Cox’s Bazar recorded the highest toll with 28 deaths, including 13 Rohingya refugees. Chattogram reported 13 deaths, while Bandarban recorded six and Rangamati reported three. One person died in Moulvibazar, while Khagrachhari and Habiganj reported no fatalities. The Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief also recorded 39 injuries. One person remains missing in Cox’s Bazar as rescue and relief teams continue operations.

    Chattogram has the largest affected population, with 595,000 people from 147,500 families facing flood conditions. Cox’s Bazar reported 158,027 affected residents from 39,506 families. Khagrachhari recorded 34,417 affected people, followed by Habiganj with 28,140 and Moulvibazar with 26,544. Bandarban reported 8,350 affected residents, while Rangamati recorded 3,524. Floodwater, hill runoff and landslides have damaged homes, roads, bridges and public facilities.

    Thousands move into emergency shelters

    Authorities opened 1,131 shelters across the seven districts and accommodated 44,457 displaced people. Chattogram operates 618 centres that house 21,900 residents, the highest number among the affected districts. Bandarban shelters 6,250 people, while Rangamati accommodates 3,637. Khagrachhari shelters 2,883 residents, Moulvibazar houses 2,172 and Cox’s Bazar accommodates 1,580. Habiganj opened two shelters, although officials did not report an occupancy figure.

    A separate assessment for Chattogram division counted damage to about 80,000 homes and 344 educational institutions. Flooding also damaged 3,840 kilometres of roads and 339 bridges and culverts across the division. Cox’s Bazar reported damage to 48,063 homes, while Bandarban recorded 15,330 affected houses. Chattogram district counted 14,281 damaged homes. Khagrachhari and Rangamati reported damage to 1,040 and 473 homes, respectively.

    Government expands food and cash assistance

    The government allocated 17.5 million taka and 3,250 tonnes of rice to the seven flood-hit districts. Chattogram received 6.5 million taka and 1,200 tonnes of rice. Cox’s Bazar received 3 million taka and 450 tonnes, while Rangamati received 2.5 million taka and 500 tonnes. Authorities also assigned cash and rice to Khagrachhari, Bandarban, Moulvibazar and Habiganj. Relief teams have distributed cooked food, dry food, drinking water and medical supplies.

    Bangladesh Army personnel and border guards have joined rescue and relief work in isolated communities. Medical teams are treating injured and sick residents in affected areas. The Flood Forecasting and Warning Centre reported that several rivers remained above danger levels at monitoring stations in multiple districts. The UN World Food Programme also activated early assistance in Bandarban, providing emergency cash support to more than 15,600 vulnerable households covering about 75,000 people.
