Google reveals $15B AI investment plan for India

NEW DELHI, October 14, 2025: Google has announced the launch of its first artificial intelligence hub in India, with a USD 15 billion investment to develop a large-scale AI infrastructure campus in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The project, unveiled at the Bharat AI Shakti event in New Delhi on October 14, 2025, marks Google’s largest single investment in the country and will span the years 2026 to 2030.  The AI hub is designed to bring Google’s full AI stack to India, encompassing compute capacity, AI research and deployment tools, data center infrastructure, energy systems, and expanded fiber-optic connectivity.

India’s AI growth gains momentum with support from PM Modi and Google CEO Sundar Pichai.

According to the company, the facility will support Google services such as Search, YouTube, Gmail, and Workspace, and provide AI infrastructure to enable enterprises, developers, and public institutions to scale AI-powered solutions. The announcement was made in the presence of Indian government officials including Ashwini Vaishnaw, Minister for Railways, Communications, and Electronics & Information Technology, and Nirmala Sitharaman, Minister of Finance and Corporate Affairs. Also attending were Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Minister for Information Technology Nara Lokesh, alongside Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud.

Google confirmed that the facility will be built in collaboration with AdaniConneX and Airtel. The campus will feature gigawatt-scale data center capacity and will be constructed using the same core infrastructure used to support Google’s global product ecosystem. The data center will be linked to existing Google R&D capabilities in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, and Pune, where teams develop AI-related software and hardware systems. As part of the infrastructure build-out, the investment includes a new international subsea cable gateway that will land in Visakhapatnam.

Infrastructure to include subsea cables and energy systems

This system will connect the region to Google’s broader global network of over two million miles of terrestrial and undersea cables. The company stated that this development will enhance digital connectivity across India and reduce latency for users, while providing additional route diversity to existing cable landings in Mumbai and Chennai. The Visakhapatnam campus will also feature integrated clean energy systems, with Google set to partner on new transmission lines, renewable energy generation, and storage projects in Andhra Pradesh.

These developments are intended to improve grid resilience and power the AI hub’s operations sustainably. Google said the project will be built to its energy-efficiency standards, in line with its broader global infrastructure goals. During the announcement, Ashwini Vaishnaw said the investment aligns with the Indian government’s AI mission and the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision. He added that digital infrastructure of this scale is expected to support skills development, particularly in AI services. Chandrababu Naidu described the project as a significant step for Andhra Pradesh and reaffirmed the state’s commitment to supporting technological investment and innovation.

Google to integrate clean energy and storage solutions

The AI hub in Visakhapatnam will join Google’s network of AI infrastructure across 12 countries. The company noted that it aims to use the site to accelerate AI research, support cloud adoption, and provide tools to public and private sector organizations in India. A study conducted by Access Partnership and commissioned by Google estimates that the investment will generate at least USD 15 billion in GDP for the United States over five years. The economic activity is attributed to the involvement of U.S.-based resources in building and operating the hub, and growth in AI-related services and infrastructure.

Google operates multiple data centers globally, and this new facility is its first of this scale in India. The project highlights a growing trend of global technology firms increasing investment in India’s digital infrastructure and AI capabilities. The initiative supports cloud adoption, data sovereignty, and advanced AI services, strengthening India’s digital economy and resilience. With the integration of subsea connectivity, renewable energy systems, and high-performance computing, the hub is expected to enable faster service delivery, greater research capabilities, and a robust foundation for emerging technologies across sectors. – By Content Syndication Services.
